How to measure yourself

How to take measurements for men and women

To take measurements accurately , you’ll need a flexible measuring tape, a pencil, and a paper. The measurements should be taken over the clothing you plan to wear with the tailored outfit that you are taking measurements for.
It’s best to have someone else take your measurements to ensure accuracy.
Key measurements should include hips, waist, chest, and the desired lengths for jackets, pants, and sleeves.

General Tips for Accurate Tailor Measurements:

  • Wear appropriate undergarments: Ensure you’re wearing the undergarments you’ll typically wear with the finished garment (e.g., a bra, undershirt).
  • Stand naturally: Maintain a relaxed, natural posture during measurements.
  • Keep the tape level: When measuring circumferences, ensure the tape is parallel to the floor.
  • Don’t pull too tight: The tape should be snug but not digging into the skin.
  • Write the measurements down carefully: Write down each measurement to avoid mistakes.
  • Double-check measurements: It’s recommended to have someone else verify the measurements.

Specific Measurements:
1. Chest:
Measure around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, keeping the tape level.
2. Waist:
Measure around the natural waistline (narrowest part of the torso) or where you prefer the waistband to sit.
3. Hips:
Measure around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks.
4. Jacket Length:
Measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) down the front to the desired length (e.g., to the knuckle of your thumb).
5. Sleeve Length:
Measure from the shoulder seam (where the sleeve joins the body of the shirt) to the desired sleeve length (e.g., to the wrist bone).
6. Trouser Outseam:
Measure from the top of the waistband to the floor along the outside of the leg.
7. Trouser Inseam:
Measure from the crotch seam to the desired length along the inside of the leg.
8. Other Measurements:
Depending on the garment, you may also need measurements for thighs, knees, calves, neck, and arms.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure accurate measurements for your tailoring project.
